What a Loser!

The biggest loser in Georgia Politics this week is Grant Brantley and his crack team of Sonny Perdue operatives. He ran for Supreme Court and his biggest credential -- that he had been nominated to the federal bench by George HW Bush -- turned out to be a little less than true. I saw Brantley say this a number of times on the trail, and I'm happy to say that two of the times I got it on tape and his appearance at the Lumpkin County GOP BBQ ended up on the TV for all to see! I also played the "deadbeat dad" in a Leah Sears commercial that was getting handcuffed by a deputy -- Georgia State YD President Jeremy Buckmaster.

Anyway, I hate to rub in the drubbing that Brantley got but check it out for yourself. See for yourself his "Lucky 13" counties and also note that he lost his home county (Cobb), Perdue's home county (Houston), the most Republican county in the state (Forsyth), every county in Congressional District 8 (which had a hotly contested Republican primary) and every county in state Senate District 24 (near Augusta) which had a nasty GOP primary where social wedge issues took front and center.

Yes LQC, except for the "Mike Sheffield factor." As noted in ajc's Political Insider dated 7-22-04 on the Coalition in the context of Court of Appeals candidate Mike Sheffield. This is why the Coalition is to be feared in judicial races where an "educated electorate" is a rare comomody.

"Sadie Fields, executive director of the Georgia Christian Coalition, sets her organization's value at 204,899 votes -- roughly 16 percent of all ballots cast on Tuesday.

That's the number of votes that Mike Sheffield got in the six-way state Court of Appeals race. Sheffield and Grant Brantley, the unsuccessful candidate for the state Supreme Court, were the only two statewide judicial candidates who cooperated with the Christian Coalition's summer questionnaire. Their glossy photographs appeared on half a million fliers distributed in hundreds of churches across the state.

Brantley had his own problems, but he had his own resources, too, so it's difficult to determine what oomph the Coalition provided.

But Sheffield is a Democrat, who had no money and little other exposure in the campaign, other than the Christian Coalition fliers.

'That's the watermark for me,' Fields said. As of late Wednesday, Sheffield and Howard Mead, a well-funded, former aide to Gov. Roy Barnes, were within dozens of votes of each other, to get into a runoff with first-place finisher Debra Bernes. A recount is anticipated."
